I think I'll always remember pulau tioman as the place which cultivated my love for marine life. It's the place where I first held a snake, where I first snorkeled, where I first saw what I thought I'll only see on discovery channel. It was the first time that I realised I could actually bear cats which are stationary but in close proximity. This was a trip of discovery, not only about marine life, flora and fauna, but also about myself. It has been a really enriching trip and I already look forward to stepping on the shores of tioman again. Tioman brought me really close to the environment, opened my eyes up to many things I would never ever see in my entire life if I had not gone for this trip. I learned to be observant about my surroundings. I believe that this situational awareness would help me scale greater heights in my future journeys.
On the last day, when we had our final trek to the turtle sanctuary, Cheryl mentioned that the Malaysian government had plans to bomb the headland near the jurassic park-like forest to build a runway for jumbo jets so as to develop Tioman into a super tourist attraction like Langkawi. That was the part where the turtle sanctuary was, the place where the water and sand were the cleanest and most beautiful, and the place where my wonderful swing was. It was really dismaying to hear that the government had already sent people down to tioman to survey the area and make further plans for the runway. I think something they forgot to consider was that without the beautiful coral reefs which provide homes for many many sea organisms, it would be detrimental to the tourism of the tioman. The island should be left alone as it is and definitely should not be commercialised. The natural beauty of the place was the main attraction of the entire place. Nothing, not even a superb runway can take the place of the coral reefs which I have come to love. Nature does not belong to us, humans. We are just a species among millions living on the earth. Every single organism has its own right to live and we should not take things into our own hands and lord our power over all other species to deprive them of their right to survive in this world. Yes, we definitely do have better clockworks in our brains, therefore we should know better than to exploit the environment for our own selfish needs and gains. We should treat everything that nature offers us respectfully, acknowledging the fact that we do not own the planet.
I want to go for the same trip next year and I really really hope that the diversity of the marine life near the island would stay intact as I dont wish to see concrete replacing the colours of the sea.
I miss hearing the sound of the sea as I fall asleep, I miss the sitting by the beach observing squirrels running on tree branches at 6am in the morning, I miss the morning walks, I miss patrick's nagging at me to eat dinner, I miss sitting at the tip of the boat, I miss dipping in the rock pool and getting freezing cold, I miss nemo, I miss the beautiful corals beneath the water surface, I miss cheryl and gert, I miss mrs fahy, I miss the furry cute sea cucumbers, I miss my barnacle group mates, I miss getting dirty and wet in the mangrove, I even miss seeing the cats running around the island, I miss eating ramly burger and ice kachang everyday and most of all, I miss the one of the colours of the sea that we named barney. Its our colour. I dont think I will forget that colour for very very long.
I love Tioman. I really do.

TIOMAN ROCKED!
hahah i just stepped foot into my house and im blogging. I HAVENT BATHED YET. so i stink (:
i shall do a day by day account of our amazing trip.
FIRST DAY:
we kinda reached school really early. we were supposed to meet at 6.15am in the foyer and i thought i would be one of the earliest at 6am. hahaha but i wasnt. there were already quite a number of people filling out white cards there. we took the bus for around 4 hours or so and went on to take the ferry. at the store at the jetty, patrick said the tongkat ali drink was for guys when they had cramps WHICH WAS OBVIOUSLY NOT. hahah tongkat ali is some kind of aphrodisiac(is it spelt this way?). the view at the top of the ferry was really spectacular. the wind was so strong, it made my hair whip my face real hard. ouch. we could see the big blue sea and the colgate white foam that was caused by the ferry. VERY VERY NICE. we had lunch at paya beach resort where we stayed and the place was nice. but this conclusion came before i saw the cats. after lunch we tried snorkeling. gert and cheryl were our instructors. it was quite fun except for the part when my goggles got kicked off by someone and sea water rushed into my eyes. that was painful ): the coral reefs were so nice. they looked like the kind that i could only admire on tv and nowhere else. dinner was when all the cats came out and i refused to step outta ma room. hahha patrick had to get me come out.
SECOND DAY:
umm i had nightmares about cats the whole night so i woke up at 3am i think. breakfast was nice cos there werent any cats yet. i finally realised that the earlier i woke up for breakfast, the less cats are there (: we went snorkeling the whole day at tulai island IT WAS WONDERFUL. i saw so many different kinds of fishes including nemo (: the clownfish. lalala. i held my breath and went down to touch the soft corals. they felt slimy but was quite nice to touch la. hahah. we spotted a freshly moulted crabby too. the moult was super cool. and the crab still had a soft shell. SOFT SHELL CRAB YUMMY whoops. lunch was nice cos we were one of the first people to get onto the shore and we chopped a shady nice spot to eat and look at the sea. when we finally finished snorkelling, we went to the marine park where we got to feed the fishes while we swam with them . NICE. ehhh i downed two nice nice chocolate ice cream too (: oh yeah i got a nasty huge cut on my back when i sat on a broken chair and it sort of crumbled. whoops. did i mention i was celebrating man utd's victory over newcastle too?
THIRD DAY:
i was sitting by the sea early in the morning observing squirrels when patrick came oustt and we went for a walk with yao ying and another girl whose name i dont know. whoops. we took pictures of pretty morning glory flowers. at around 9, we went for the rainforest trek which was irritating cos we had to do all sorts of surveys and the route was hard to trek. huge boulders and fallen tree trunks blocked our way and we had to climb our way up. we rotated instructors throughout and got a different one for each station. we measured the diameter of trees, maturity index of trees, used trigo to calculate height of trees and did the soil analysis. hahah the coming down part wasnt easier at all. my legs were wobbling. cos i think my muscles were overstretched or something. the weather was freaking hot that day. we were roasting when we walked back to the jetty to take the boat. we saw schools of fishes too. HUGE SCHOOLS. oh and i sat at the tip of the boat. hahaha the one gert was sitting on on the first day. nice! i could see the stuff in the sea. but we didnt see any dolphins ):
FOURTH DAY:
we basically did sea shore survey and mangrove surveys which were not very interesting. BUT we went to the rock pool during our free time in the evening and it was amazing. the water pressure felt like jacuzzi. a cold one though. i didnt dare to go in la. it was freezing. the water made my hair smoother (: we had the mangrove night walk after that and i actually touched and held a snake's body. it was the dog faced water snake. patrick was supposed to take a pic for me la. but his shutter screwed up or sth and i had to hold the snake for super long to wait for him. my heartbeat went crazy cos the snake was quite gross to hold. i hate its tail. GROSS. we had bonfire after that. HAHAH our performance item was crap. we improvised on the fact that bridget told us that barnacles WHICH IS OUR GROUP NAME had penises 7 time longer than their body. so we kinda performed that and embarrassed ourselves.
our song lyrics:
to the tune of barney:
barney is a dinosaur from our imagination
barnacles are sea creatures that crawl along the edges
to the tune of i love you:
i cling here, you cling there
we are clinging everywhere
with a careless kick and an occasional brush
no more clinging barnacles
we were all super high that night. slpt at 1 plus. hahah
LAST DAY:
i was feeling super sad. i didnt wanna leave that beautiful place. we went to the turtle sanctuary where there was a super cool swing. it swung towards the sea. so if i had let go, i'd have flown into the sea. patrick took a pic for me and nic on the swing. hahah NICE SWING! i miss my childhood. we gave cheryl milk mentos and lollipop as presents. milk for her to grow taller. hahha. we gave gert tongkat ali drink mentos and lollipop. HAHAH that was hilarious.
BYE TIOMAN I'LL MISS YOU! I'LL MISS THE RAMLY BURGER, THE ICE KACHANG, THE RUNNING AWAY FROM CATS, THE STUPID JOKES WE CRACKED, MY BUNKMATES AND THE SOUND OF THE SEA AS I SLEEP.
im gna go back next year . i dont care (:
